Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.” Now that Season 1 of the hit series wrapping up—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus. On the Incredible Audience Reaction One could easily to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to steer clear of all that. “It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.” Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show. “It is not our goal to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.” “Better to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in. A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus? Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of. “There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.” On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort. “I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.” Then again, why mess with the iconic TV endings? “My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile. Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
