People have gathered around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"The violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not pose a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The national leadership delayed state commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was held across the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the plan.

A senior delegate involved in the talks indicated that an late session of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.

The representative explained the morning session finished without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.

He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the gaps between the two sides.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies provision
  • After-conflict management of the area

Public Feeling

In the city's memorial area previously, young a woman - whose brother endured the assault on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No place seems like home now and until all the hostages are released none of us will feel safe."

"When we see all home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to heal," she added.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty continue in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Activist a participant remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now consistently show that around the majority of Israeli citizens want the conflict to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the location of the music event, grieving people came together to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli attacks continued.

In the main city, bombardments were reported in the morning of that day in the western district, area and locality areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.

"Once the dusk arrives, the anxiety appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.

"My family are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had accepted the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern district.

Another medical facility in the southern city of the city indicated additional fatalities had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the south, health workers said.
