An extensive manufacturing zone located on the outskirts of the capital is dealing with nuclear contamination after a government team detected traces of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two production plants inside the area, that encompasses businesses that export chilled marine products.
Urgent Response and Goods Recall
The finding has triggered immediate cleanup efforts and the relocation of local inhabitants, following a similar pollution alert in the United States that was traced back to the Jakarta facilities.
An important multinational store chain is among the businesses that have recalled products from its stores after the discovery.
Probe and Detection of Contamination
Indonesian authorities initiated an investigation after the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a shipment of frozen breaded shrimp sent by an Indonesian firm.
The FDA issued an warning advising distributors and retailers to dispose of the product and not sell it, even though the found level was well under the agency's action threshold. It added that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had detected would not pose an immediate hazard to consumers.
The FDA explained: “The primary health effect of worry after longer term, ongoing low dose contact (eg through eating of contaminated products or liquid over time) is an elevated risk of the disease, caused by harm to DNA within body cells.”
Extensive Contamination and Medical Examinations
Radioactivity tests showed at least 22 factories in the industrial zone were affected. The official team did not name the 21 other production facilities, but said they would immediately receive cleanup procedures carried out by Indonesia's atomic energy authority.
A senior official declared that residents residing in strongly polluted zones would be moved until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the well-being of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.
Medical officials additionally conducted checks on nearby employees and residents living close to the industrial estate, finding 9 people who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a hospital before being cleared to go back.
Decontamination and Containment Measures
The contaminated locations will immediately undergo decontamination procedures by Indonesia's nuclear agency. Officials have further designated the site of a scrap metal factory as an containment center for contaminated goods.
The country, which operates no atomic energy facilities or weapons program, suspects that Caesium-137 may have entered the nation from abroad.
Source of Contamination and Import Limits
An official spokesperson told reporters that recycled metal shipments were the probable cause of contamination and announced the government would immediately impose limits on scrap metal imports. It was stated that transport were additionally being inspected for possible exposure as they moved through the area.
About Caesium-137 and Health Concerns
Caesium-137 is a dangerous radioactive isotope that typically enters the environment as a result of nuclear experiments or incidents, like Fukushima or Chernobyl. Small amounts are present in soil, food and air.
The amount detected in the chilled prawns was far lower than FDA action levels, but the agency stated long-term exposure to including low doses of caesium was linked to an elevated risk of the disease.
Recall Information
The recalled seafood was sold at major retail locations across at least a dozen US states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
